As I sit down at my computer tea in hand, sweater on, there is no greater reminder to me that fall is on its way. Gone are the warm days of summer - oh hell who am I kidding we didn't have many of those this year at all. But for me one of the easiest ways to tell well autumn is here and winter is only a stone's throw away is my father. Out goes the straw cowboy hat of his summer wardrobe and in runs the heavy grey Stetson of cooler days - and THIS is what greeted me this morning... Welcome autumn! I look forward to your beautiful displays.

Dates that change our lives...
Are there dates in your life that have changed it forever?
The day you got married perhaps?
The day you found out you were pregnant?
The day you lost someone you cared about?
The day you graduated High School or college?
Well 10 years ago today my life was changed and I didn't even know it for a week! 10 years ago today my niece and dearest friend Christy had a beautiful baby girl and 7 days later she told me about her. I was devastated that at 18 my niece was now a mom... I was certain her life was ruined forever. I prayed for Alicia to disappear, to be eaten by the universe, to just go away. Christy was so proud of her little bundle and wanted to share her with me, she said "Aunty, it's important - get to know her" I took her to the movies at 13 days old. I took her to see "10 things I hate about you" because there were so many more than 10 things I hated about this, this thing that had invaded MY life... Well if you have seen the movie you know that it ends happily and so has my relationship with Alicia... A bassinet changed how I looked at her and we have been close ever since.
She has changed me, and I have helped to mold her... I want to be able to take some credit for the amazing human she is turning into... I want to feel I had a hand in it.
We have certainly had our ups and down Miss Bella and I.
~I taught her to read - her first word was life... I told her I was amazed by her that life was hard.
~She taught me to make balloon animals!
~She gave me her foot!
~I held her as they put in an IV for an emergency surgery (the docs gave ME drugs to survive this - Christy was as cool as a cucumber)
~We cried together when her father and Great grandmother died
~We were at the carnival when her Grandpa Florida died
~Did I tell you she gave me her foot?
~She threw flowers at my feet at my wedding
~We spent MANY hours throwing golf balls in the river at Richardson's (we were "playing mini golf" really we just paid and walked around throwing the balls in the river and retrieving them)
~Yup she gave me her foot!
~She saw Mimi
~She has given me more hugs than probably anyone else alive
~She has enriched my life and taught me to love in more ways than I ever knew possible.
~And yes she gave me her foot...
Today she is 10 - and 10 years ago today I was given a present, a very real present... The future, and it's one I can believe in!
Happy birthday JaBell I love you so very much and if it takes the rest of my life I will make it so you know because I don't want to have to tell you I love you more than you will ever know!

Congratulations Snoppy
We all know I have somewhere in the vicinity of 1,000,000 nieces and nephews so I am frequently proud of one or another for SOMETHING (and yes breathing frequently can be that something) but last weekend Stefanie AKA Stefanopolis AKA Snoppy and her cheering team did an amazing job at the state competition and have moved on to regionals. So on November 22nd if the Methuen "B team" is in the first two of their division she will head down to DISNEY to compete in nationals (I told her if she is competing in Disney she can bet her favorite aunty will be there) so send some good luck thoughts to her and meanwhile check her out with her trophy (and missing teeth - I hadn't seen her in a couple months so the no teeth thing was making me laugh)

Cancer is scarier than ghouls…
Do you know it takes me longer to think of a title than it does to write a whole post? Well there is a fun fact for you!
So on Saturday the 2nd of August my friend Laura rode the pan mass challenge, she has done it a few times but the last two (prior to this year) I have met her at the end of the ride.
The first year it was in this really odd period in history for my family, Mom was at MGH with a “supposed” brain tumor (We freaking knew it was a brain tumor they just hadn’t told us it was malignant but they wouldn’t even call it a tumor until it was confirmed) as of Friday and then Saturday and Sunday Laura rode. I met her Sunday night with a totally new found respect for what she was doing – she really was saving lives and so much more. I am pretty sure that after biking 180 miles the LAST thing I would want to do is have to deal with a sad Joy on her way back to the hospital but Laura did it with a smile and told me that that’s why she rode, no worries at all. She rode those 180 miles with Mom’s name tattooed to her leg in sharpie and sent good thoughts all the while. I remember (I may have even blogged it) saying that it was Laura’s legs and the beginning of a survivor’s story that kept my “eyes on the prize”. Monday Mom was diagnosed – blah blah…
Last year Laura again rode and I looked forward to meeting her at the end. As we got ready in our heads (because I knew I was babysitting Danielle that night) my mom quietly asked if she could go. OF COURSE OF COURSE OF COURSE (ooops better ask Laura) and so Jim, Danielle, Mom and I met up with Kevin and followed him to the finish line to cheer our hero on. Mom met Laura with a necklace (a dragonfly) and Laura met Mom with a t-shirt, they hugged and again Laura told me THIS is why she rides.
*I need to add in here that I asked Laura for these pictures a couple weeks ago and I am just looking at them for the first time today and I must say that THIS picture (above) is the MOST alive my mom looked after brain surgery in any picture - I love it!!!
Well fast forward another year and we all know what’s up so no point in talking about it. And Laura was riding and in my head I planned on meeting her, I was going to go to Halloween at the camp and then go meet Laura at the end… And as I looked around at the spooks, and creepy crawlies, and ghouls and ghosts, AND EVEN niece’s having temper tantrums the ended with her not being able to celebrate Halloween at all I realized I couldn’t go, that the dark of night and haunted happenings here were a safer place for me. Hell, cancer is scary, but people are changing that future and I hope and pray that someday your kids will think of cancer the way we think of Chicken Pox – a quick shot and nothing to worry about.

So I stayed at Halloween 08 and really it was a great time – I am so glad that I did. I got to watch Tyler be a spider and Alicia won the “scariest costume award” and Jim and Christy (though this year I can take some credit for the set up) won best camp-ground.
We stayed until late and toasted Laura at the time we thought she would be crossing (no I didn’t have an alcoholic drink but Jim did – must remember it was Halloween = adult trick or treating)
Happy Halloween to all until next July (though this week it was in August which just messed me up)
Tyler loved having multiple arms - I think he wants to grow a few more now, then he could play and EAT at the same time - something he has trouble with currently
Steffy was a dead pirate and she loved this costume
And Alicia as scary as I have ever seen her
~Last note, I bought the girls their costumes (and Danielle's) mid-November and paid less than $10 for their 3 costumes and mine for this year - not bad, huh? I think Stef's was $2 Alicia's was $2 Danielle's was $4 and mine was $1.50

The fun, the fabulous, the fourth
SO... I love scrapbooks, I think they are a thing of beauty. Each picture shown to the best of it's ability (much like a horse in fitting and show but I digress) and together the pictures create a story or a snippet of a day worth remembering. The flaw with all this is that I do NOT like to scrapbook. Sigh, what to do what to do... Well in walks our hero without his cape and he announces "Hun I bought you a year's subscription to smilebox, it says you can make gorgeous scrapbooks online and then have them printed or print them at home... I thought it would help you get some photos off your camera" WELL was he ever right, it also helped me realize I don't need to save every picture I take :-) AND AND AND it allows you to blog what you made with just a click of a button - how cool is that? So here is my first installment of "A day worth remembering"
I do realize that my pages are nowhere near as beautiful as those of Michelle, Danielle, and Tricia but I actually made them (which is something I never would have done otherwise) and they are beautiful in my book... The only thing I "edited" was that there is that white border around pages when you print them so I cropped that and glued the whole page to some pretty cardstock. All in all the 5 pages took me about 25 minutes and are an okay substitute for someone like me who will never spend the time for real scrapbooking...
Oh and PS I printed 2 copies and gave one set to my sister so she would have pages to remember the day too...

A time of growth
That title sounds like so much more than this post is about :-)
(I am talking about plants here)
But first, for the past 7 years I have watched Alicia’s gymnastic recital and each year she does an “okay” job. She doesn’t excel but she also enjoys herself so it’s always been a great way to spend a night. THEN came along last night where my shy and not too talented young niece left and this direct, thinking, calculating girl took her place. Before she does anything she stops plans it in her head (I swear you can watch it happen) and nails it! Not a wobble on the balance beam (she was the ONLY one to not fall off at all), a floor routine that was exactly what was asked for, tumbles that were flawless, and a back walk-over that is levels above where she is! But if you ask me her biggest accomplishment of the night was that she got on the podium, accepted her medal and stopped, smiled and let us take a picture! Way to grow up Ja-Belle, I have enjoyed watching you blossom into this amazing confident young lady – keep up the good work!
Speaking of blossoming lets talk about my plants! I have growing for my vegetable garden 08:
Tomatoes (red and yellow)
Squash (winter)
Peppers (Cayenne and Jalapeno)
Leeks
Strawberries
Raspberries
Watermelon
Cilantro
Parsley
Thyme
Basil (green and purple)
Dill
Mint
Chives
And Stevia
So far everything is looking great I have at the very least seedlings but in most cases I have good sized plants, and I got some information on how to store some of this for winter use – I plan on making some sun dried tomatoes since I have like 5 or 6 tomato plants and drying the peppers was on my list though I really don’t know if that will happen.
And for my “regular garden” everything is planted and looking pretty darn solid I am sure that in a couple weeks it will be a thing of beauty right now that it looks like a garden that just got planted and needs to get more work done it… I will post pictures now and again in a few weeks so we can check the difference. This is technically my rose garden but last year’s neglect (I was busy) added to this winter’s beating means that out of 10 bushes I lost 7, I am happy for the 3 I have left and will slowly grow back the garden but meanwhile it is a rose and annual garden (instant color).
Lilac season has passed which is always so sad to me since I think for those weeks my yard is gorgeous, but this year I actually looked forward to it passing since my neighbor and I are taking shoots from each other’s bushes so that we can have more variety in both of our yards – so he will take a couple of my French lilacs and I will get one or two of his white, I can’t wait to see how gorgeous that looks in a few years, I will have a hedge of pale purple, white and French (almost black purple) lilacs – I think it will be a thing of beauty!

Let's just forget
(all I want for Christmas...)
That I went to work after a tough Christmas and got into an office with NO computer because they "replaced" mine but forgot to give me a new one. Lets just forget that they also changed ALL my passwords so I couldn't work on anyone else's computer. Yes, lets even just forget that IT was off... Let it go... Being cranky about it just won't help :-)
So how were your holidays? Mine were interesting I guess on Wednesday all I could think of was how awful they were but now I can't even remember what wasn't perfect... So lets just forget that it was anything but perfect!
Tyler has become my favorite little subject these days (ironically at the same time I have become his favorite person). He has SO much personality and if I try to call him Tyler he stomps his little foot and tells me "You call me boy" (my pet nickname for him) and when there is more than just me around he calls me "Aunty That" because for months and months when he was saying mama, dada, nana Christy was pointing at me and saying "who is that?" and he thinks that my name is that now... He is such a little imp.
This is him and Tiki - please note my poor cat looks more than annoyed she just doesn't like babies - he was being wonderful to her and she was still mad!
And with his Christmas morning coffee???
Mom Jim and I had these great plans, we were going to make: Sugar cookies, Gingerbread men, this tree and a few other things... Well that didn't happen but we did finish this beautiful tree and we had a great family time just chatting and laughing the night away - it was wonderful
Jim and I took all the girlies to the Stone Zoo for Zoo Lights, there is something so magical about being surrounded with some of your favorite people with your breath fogging the air in front of you lights twinkling all around and animals lazily watching the world go by. It was literally like walking through a fairy tale with no words - OOOOH I think next year I will beg storytellers to go with me and have them each take a 15 minute section and have them tell me stories - ohhhhh seriously talk about life's perfection!
At the end of our fairytale walk three different random people walked up and gave each of the girls a ticket so they were able to go on a ride, it was amazing!

Moments of greatness @---}--
So, I just got out of bed to write this post (and yes I do realize that this means I have blogged four times in one week - don't get used to it) and it really isn't that significant a post but it was something that came to me in a moment of clarity...
Even in the best thing in all the world it can't be perfect all the time otherwise you wouldn't appreciate it. Not in friendships, families, jobs, animals, cars, houses, or hell even conversations do get truly true perfection. And you know what? That is perfect!!!!!!!!! If you did you'd never appreciate those moments of greatness, I mean when you get your nails done and they are flawless on day one you are oohing and awwing over them but by day three it is just normal and you don't appreciate them. I guess that's how life is. There are moments of greatness, moments of "I mink not" and there are also moment where you are up to your armpits in shit (either literal or not) and if you didn't have those you couldn't and wouldn't appreciate the days when you know that the sun is shining and the birds are singing and well life is happening just for you. And at this moment I am having one of those... A moment of greatness!
I wish you all your moments and that you appreciate them for what they are...

Anyway it said that I have 16 days left until vacation and I can not wait.
My vacation starts with one of my favorite days to live in Wilmington the 4th of July celebration (oddly this year it is on the 30th of June) and then goes to me up in Loon.
I would love to have people Join me at the "4th".
